NDIS and Eligibility Criteria to Seek Access to NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) aims to support eligible candidates with intellectual, cognitive, sensory, and psychosocial disability. The NDIS also provides early intervention supports for eligible candidates with disabilities or children with developmental delays.

It is important to note that the NDIS is not a welfare system. The NDIS is a scheme designed to help people get the support that they need to improve their skills and independence over time.

What are the Eligibility Requirements to Qualify for NDIS?

According to the NDIS website, there are3 major criteria that a potential candidate needs to satisfy to be considered for the Scheme.

The criteria are:

• Age Requirements: The candidate must be between the ages of 7 and 65 when the application is submitted.
• Residency Requirements: The potential candidate needs to be a citizen of Australia, a permanent resident of Australia, a permanent visa holder, or a protected special category visa holder.
• Disability Requirements: The candidate needs support from a person because of permanent disability or significant disability, or satisfies the early intervention requirements.

During the processing of a potential candidate’s eligibility for NDIS, to check if a person meets the access criteria, NDIA first considers whether or not the person meets the age and residence requirements.

If the person meets both the age and residency requirements, then the NDIA will go on to consider whether the potential candidate meets the disability requirement or the early intervention requirements

After meeting the eligibility requirements for joining the NDIS, you can apply for NDIS on the official website or apply through an NDIS service provider like NDMHS.

What Happens After You Have Gained Access to the NDIS?

After gaining access to the support system provided by the NDIS, the NDIA, or most likely one of their partner organizations, will work with you in developing your first plan.
